Technical dive sites of southern Thailand

Racha Noi Island

Perhaps the most easily and quickly accessible place for technical diving from Phuket is the south of Racha Noi Island (South Tip dive site) and the neighboring underwater rocks - pinnacles The Rock and Racha Noi Bay Pinnacle.

Depths of up to 60 m are available, but it is optimal to dive within the range of 40-50 m, descending along gentle rocky or sandy slopes. Underwater, you can encounter large marble rays, Jenkins' rays, and sometimes manta rays, turtles, leopard sharks, and whitetip reef sharks.

There can be strong currents, including downward currents!

Visibility is 15-30 m.

King Cruiser Wreck

Another popular spot is the "King Cruiser" ferry. Despite its "non-technical" depth of 30 m to the bottom, this wreck is ideal for Advanced Nitrox / Deco Procedures dives.

The 85-meter-long ship with four levels of decks, though quite heavily damaged, is still very interesting for diving, both in terms of penetration and marine life.

During the full moon and new moon periods, there can be strong currents.

Visibility is 5-25 m.

Song Hong Lake

One of our regularly visited "technical" sites is the Song Hong Lake. The lake is quite far from Phuket - about 250 km of driving.

Sheer walls, depths up to 110 meters, visibility 5-40 m. You can dive year-round, but the best time to visit in terms of visibility is the dry season from January to May.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang

These two underwater rocks are located in Krabi province, 1.5 hours by speedboat or fast catamaran from Koh Lanta or 2.5 hours by speedboat from Phuket.

A trip to these sites can be combined with a visit to Song Hong.

Underwater, you can often encounter interesting large marine life - during the season from autumn to early spring, manta rays and whale sharks are seen.

There can be strong currents, but there are usually places to hide from them.

Depths up to 60 m, visibility 20-30 m.

Deep Wrecks of the Andaman Sea

For those who like it "hotter," we can organize trips to the deep wrecks of the Andaman Sea. Depths range from 55-90 m, requiring Norm. TMX certification and higher. The idial option for this dives is a use of CCR.

Сavern and Cave Dive Sites of Southern Thailand

Song Hong

The most visited cave dive site in Thailand. It is located approximately four hours' of drive from Phuket.

It consists of two lakes that "connect" at a depth of 40 meters.

The entrance to the main part of the cave is in the lake at a depth of 35-40 m. The cave has permanent lines in the cavern zone of the lake - curcle lines at depths of 20 and 30 m. There are also circle lines at depths of 40, 50, 60 and 70 meters. Main line is going to a depth of nearly 200 m, extending almost 1 km from the entrance.

Depends on the season visibility could change and the best time to dive is February till May and sometimes June.

Required level: Intro To Cave

Given the great depths, the Deco Procedures level and above is highly desirable.

There's also plenty of room for rebreather trimix dives. :)

Sra Keow (Sa Kaew)

Sra Keow is a whole network of deep underwater caves located 160 km from Phuket in Krabi province.

The deepest cave is Sra Keow 1, with a maximum reached depth of 238 m.

Sra Keow 1, Sra Keow 2, and Sra Keow 3 start from small lakes, while Sra Keow 4 requires a use of SRT. The first and second caves are connected by passages at depths of 65, 80, and 201 m. Few year ago, a passage was found between the third and fourth caves. It is likely that there is a passage between the second and third caves, but it has not been found yet.

These caves are deep, dark, and easily stirred up. There are sidemount and no-mount passages.

While SK1, SK2 and SK3 are springs there are also SK1 and SK2 sumps. SK1 sump is sidemount only and could be accessed from SK1 spring while there is no easy access to SK2 sump.

During dry season visibility could reach 20-25 m, but it is usually 3-10 m. Depends on how lucky you are and how good is your skills viz in the sump coud be 0-20 meters.

Minimum level: Intro To Cave.

Spider Cave

Perhaps the shallowest and most narrow cave in Thailand (so, sidemount only), located 130 km from Phuket in Krabi province.

Unlike the previous caves, this one is a spring with significant water flow, so even in the rainy season, the water is almost always clear.

The maximum depth is 17 meters. Visibility is usually good - 15-25 m.

Required level: Intro To Cave

Klang Cave

A very interesting cave with rather peculiar visibility. The cave is located not far from the Spider Cave, but the water in it is almost stagnant and dark, unlike its neighbor. The best time to dive in Klang is February-May.

The cave is potentially promising for new passages, but due to challenging conditions, it is rarely visited.

Visibility is 1-10 meters. The maximum reached depth is 36 meters.

Required level: Intro To Cave.

Snake Cave

A sea cave on Phi Phi Don Island. It got its name from the sea snakes that live in it. The entrance is at a depth of 20 meters, and the cave gradually shallows and ends with a large chamber with an air dome. The maximum distance from the entrance is 120 meters, visibility is 15-30 m, and there is a halocline.

Minimum level: Cavern Diver.

Bell Chamber Cave

Another cave on Phi Phi Don Island, with the entrance located near the entrance to Snake Cave (it is believed that these caves are connected by a no-mount passage). The entrance is also at 20 m, after which the cave shallows and ends in a beautiful bell-shaped chamber after 80 m. Visibility is usually 15-30 m.

Minimum level: Cavern Diver.

Chandelier Cave

A sea cave on Phi Phi Leh Island. The entrance is at a depth of 23 m, after which the cave rises and ends in a small dry chamber at a depth of 2 m after a sharp bend at 10 m. The cave stirs up easily, so despite its small size, it is not that simple.

Minimum level: Intro To Cave.

Maya Cave

A large grotto on Phi Phi Leh Island, located at the exit of the famous Maya Bay. The huge entrance is at a depth of 7 meters, and the main attraction of this cave is the blacktip reef sharks and lobsters.

There are many air domes in this cavern, and the maximum distance from the entrance in a straight line is 80 m.

Minimum level: Cavern Diver.
